The Aftermath

First and foremost, my deepest condolences and sympathies go out to the Families of the victims of the Fort Hood shooting. They need the support of the community.

Since last week's horrific shooting a lot of developments have been made. The Army's Chief of Staff, Gen. George Casey made the rounds on the Sunday morning talk-show circuit, including Meet the Press and State of the Union (1). He said he feared a backlash against Muslims because of the Fort Hood shooting (1), which is exactly what I've been fearing and trying to negate since Friday.

"As horrific as this tragedy was, if our diversity becomes a casualty, I think that’s worse,” Casey said. (1)

Though I feel the same way, I have to look at my personal family situation first. My wife says she is literally scared to leave the house right now, thanks in no small part to me, her face and my son's are in the public domain. She's scared of being recognized, scared of the backlash. Personally, the same feeling of foreboding I felt as an 8th grader after September 11, the same knot in my stomach I felt after the
July 7, 2005 London bombings and the 2004 attacks in Spain, the same terror I felt after my Father's car was vandalized in 2001 is back now.

Here are a few reasons why:
  • Dip his ass in pig sh*t and shoot him in the f*cking head and stick a pigs d*ck in his a$s and bury him with pig carcasses like the piece of f*cking sh*t he is. (he) isn't welcome here!!!!!! ONce a dirty fucking muslim, always a dirty fucking muslim. (he) can kiss my ass the dirty fucking illegal alien. I hate him Location: Fort Stockton, TX http://killeen.craigslist.org/rnr/1458204230.html
  • "Now, it only takes a drop of common sense to see that the muslims are infiltrating every aspect of our lives. They have bought the convience stores and motels, the gas stations and the homes that they allow to fall to shambles and rent to hard working AMERICANS. They are doctors and lawyers. And, they are in our military. If you wanted to wage a holy war, what better way to do than instill your troops into the culture you wish to destroy? They know where we live, where we work. They can kill us as a matter of professional practice and they are killing us financially. Put them into your enemy's military and they can kill from within."

Oh my gosh!! I have said this for years!! Everyone has always said no way....look again people! I was raised to believe that there is good and bad in ALL races...but, these people are scaring the crap out of me! It's time to close our borders, throw the existing crap out, bring our men and women home from everywhere....line our borders and shoot down, sink, blow up whoever tries to get in our space! scares me too....send him out with the rest of the trash.....he's a useless piece of shit! Is it going to take the "Americans" here to stop all this crap? Can't seem to get a government that will.....they're all to concerned with looking good! What's going to make you look good is to grow some balls and do whatever it takes to stop this! WOW! I feel so much better! And PLEASE don't come back at with all that peace and humanity shit! Are they showing us any?? I say nuke the bastards and the pony they rode in on! Have a good one y'all! http://killeen.craigslist.org/rnr/1455219150.html
  • To all them Muslim's who Hate America & our way of life. I have one thing to say to you all. Get the fuck out of our country. Your religion is crazy, and so is your race. I hope God one day exterminates you all and the world would be a better place!http://killeen.craigslist.org/rnr/1455054832.html
And that's just a few of them, there are many more like them, not hard to find. It's scary, but I trust in my fellow Soldiers and the Fort Hood Family to take care of mine right now, too. Rather then dissuade me this type of ranting only emboldens me. Just like Gen. Casey is already doing, now is the time for a message of unity to be broadcast. Hopefully, I can get through to a few of these people, hopefully they can see that the shooting suspect is not representative of all Muslims, just as he is not representative of all Soldiers.

I'm thankful for the outpouring of support and calls for caution...see below:

You WILL get through to them, because a big chunk of folks are just responding out of fear and anger. Unfortunately, times of crisis seem to make some more vulnerable to the over-the-top rantings of the lunatic fringe. Once the initial fear-driven frenzy is over, they'll realize they were being ridiculous.

Too bad you're not a Sikh. Crap, they wear turbans and get grief as well from the ignorant.

As I said before--do we point out the people who kill abortion doctors are christians? Likewise, do we point out the religion of other mass shooters? How about the a------e who shot up the Holocaust museum, what religion was he? How about the d------d who gunned down 3 Pittsburgh Officers, what religion was he? How about the J-----f who shot up an LA Fitness Centre in Pittsburgh? What religion was he? What religion were the Oklahoma City Bombers?

No, only this a-----e because he is a "muslim".

The Fort Hood shooter could have (and should have) been screaming "Kill for Cthulhu". He was an effing whack job and his religious pseudofundamentalism was a symptom of his mental illness.

Anyway, there are loads of whack job Christians out there as well who want to stir up trouble.

BUt, I am preaching to the Choir.

I am much like your wife, my now Ex served and Ft Hood was our base that is why I followed this so close.

I followed it close cause I do care. I care about justice and fairness. my family has fought hard for it.(ex was disabled in the Gulf, grandfather was POW (Canadian), cousin currently in Iraq)

I was yelling it to every news source that would listen when I thought your blog OUT of hundreds of other military blogs might have to come down cause it ruffled feathers.

I am Canadian and with an American ex and American children. I care about the backlash. I worry about the thousands of women who wear hijab in the west. They will feel the backlash as will Muslim soldiers, are they Muslim first? or are they American..fact is just as you can be a right wing American Christian you can be a peace loving Muslim American born in the USA.

Thanks you for standing up for justice and freedom may it ring!

My father in law is buried in Arlington National Cemetary. He's Jewish and earned the Silver Star in Korea. Despite this, someone defaced the Jewish star on his grave.

Why? This makes no sense.

If someone is willing to fight for their country, it doesn't matter what faith they are.

How can Christians talk about intolerance when they also exhibit it?

The problem is that religious intolerance is unamerican.

the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it on all occasions their effectual support.--George Washington

Bigots love men like Major Hasan for proving them right...at least in their own minds. As I said in an earlier post, Hasan's behavior more closely reminds me of George Sodini than of anyone really dedicated to Al Quaeda. He was almost 40, had no relationship with a woman and may never have had such, and he lacked the two things most people require to remain on an even keel: a sense of belonging and a sense of purpose. Expect to see more of these guys throughout America and expect them to belong to no particular demographic group.

The movie "The 40 Year Old Virgin" was cute and stupid. The reality is far uglier.

wow, I'm so sorry you and your family are going through this. I've spent so much time dodging hatred on twitter, ironically from people who *defend* many of the people in the spotlight promoting divisive rhetoric towards others because of the actions of others. I stupidly wasn't worried about a backlash, because I stupidly believed people would look at each person individually. that's a friggin' far off dream now. *sigh*

I'm more than angry at Nidal Hasan's actions, which were cold and calculated. but I'm also outraged at Timothy McVeigh, David Duke, William Pierce (dead but followers still promote his messages), Richard Poplawski (murdered 3 Pittsburgh police officers), Von Braunn (Holocaust shooter) and the persons behind the deaths of Polly Klaas, Nevaeh Buchannan, Shaniya Davis, Jessica Lunsford and many more. all of these persons, minus Shaniya Davis' predators, are white. should we round up all white people and denounce them as evil, murderous killers?

I also know when the 9/11 attackers are brought to NYC, it will stir up a lot of anger, even from me, but not because they're here, or because they are muslim. but because they are some stupid mother*&#&# who used religion as a cop-out for plain 'ol hatred!!!

I guess I'm "fortunate". I'm part of a diverse family (black, white, native indian & japanese) and grew up around the Ku Klux Klan ACTIVELY expressing their views PUBLICLY which we had to tolerate until up to 1986. because of that situation, I had to get to know people individually. I mean who could I group into one general statement to hate, and how could I identify w/just one group? I cringe when I'm referred to as "African-American" because I'm not, just a brown face, so auto-assume, yet, I know nothing about Africa, and black family were part of 1700s slave trade.

I'm even trying to picture me hating: "white people are evil" - oh hey Grandpa, Uncle Red, cousins, etc. (white). "man, black people!" - oh hey grandma, mom, dad, aunts/uncles, cousins. "damn asians" - oh hey great-aunts, cousins. "spanish, german, italians, irish, chinese, dutch, russians, iranians!" - oh hey best friends who saved my life LOL I may have to invent a race to hate. but it's a lot easier to get to know, than it is to assume, plus your life is more enriched getting to know individually.
